How does light travel?

This week in Science children set up an investigation to explore how light travels. Children arranged three pieces of card with holes in to a straight line. Children found that the light went through all three holes, therefore the light travelled in a straight line.

The second investigation which children set up, explored how the distance of a light source impacts the shadow formed. What happens to the shadow when the light source is closer to the object? What is a hypothesis?

This week our PE focus has been working on our team building skills. Children worked together as a team to play ‘The Floor Is Lava’. The aim of the game was to get across the playground without touching the ground. This game focussed on willingness to trust others and accept support.

In Maths, children have been collecting data for Nestle based on their Smarties. Children presented their data in to a bar chart and a frequency table. What did you find out? Did all the tubes have the same amount of Smarties? Next week children will be emailing the data to Nestle.

Have a great weekend.

Creating Shadows

Today year 3 went outside with their sculptures. First we found a place where the sun was and then we started drawing around the shadows. Lots of times the shadows moved around and sometimes the wind blew. But when we didn’t hold our sculptures, the wind would blow it as if it was a balloon.

Some people went in the shed that was on the playground because there was less wind. But the sun wasn’t in the shed, so we couldn’t see the shadows that we’ve drawn (we needed to shade it in). After we shaded it in, we moved around the playground, so the shadow moved around.

We learned that a shadow is formed when something blocks the light so it forms a shadow.

‘Light and Shadows’

This week in Science children began to explore their new topic ‘Light and Shadows’. Children learnt that a shadow is made when an object blocks light. To investigate shadows further we created sculptures out of tin foil. These will be used next week to create shadow art. Have a look at how we are getting on so far.

In PSCHE, children focused on the stereotypical views that exist around the world. Children learnt the importance of never judging a person just because of the way they look.

In Computing, we have been learning how to digitally manipulate an image. Children used a range of artistic effects and changed the colour of their image. Can you remember the steps to applying  artistic effects?

Have great weekend.
